Linguaglossa
"Bying some good local meat before you leave Linguaglossa is probably the only reason to stop in town." (The Rough Guide to Sicily)
The Church Chiesa Madre (18th century) in Linguaglossa. The doorway and windows are decorated with lava stone.
Founded on a lava stream in 1566, Linguaglossa has little more to offer tourists than the church Chiesa Madre, also known as "La Matrice" (1613) and the Chiesa di S. Egidio. The sleepy town had 5,416 inhabitants in 2011 (in 1911: 13,592).
Many organized excursions to Etna depart from Linguaglossa. A mountain road (Mareneve) to the Mount Etna’s summit begins here. It leads to the ski fields of Piano Provenzana.
